Identity of the Soul

UK CINEMA TOUR – SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER

Identity of the Soul

with Vanessa Redgrave reading poetry
by Henrik Ibsen and Mahmoud Darwish

A unique 5-screen cinematic event, interpreting epic Norwegian and Palestinian poetry, with stunning images filmed around the world and an original fusion soundtrack of Scandinavian and Arabian influences and contemporary electronic rhythms.

Following its critically acclaimed West Bank, Qatar and Norwegian tour, Thomas Høegh’s Identity of the Soul can be experienced at the opening of the Cambridge Film Festival and in select cinemas around the UK throughout the Autumn. The event features Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s epic poem “Terje Vigen” and renowned Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish’s “A Soldier Dreams of White Lilies” read by Vanessa Redgrave, against a backdrop of stunning images filmed around the world, and an original fusion soundtrack of Scandinavian and Arabian influences and contemporary electronic rhythms.

The 60-minute work, to be shown on a unique set up of five screens specially installed in the auditorium, explores moral choices, revenge and reconciliation. The visuals comprise new material and footage from the BFI National Archive, and allow the audience to step into a landscape and be absorbed by the sounds and images, while being invited to address questions about the nature of choices in life.

Press Reviews

"The show is an invitation to the audience to step into landscapes where the action could take place and to put themselves into the shoes of the protagonists and ask themselves what they would have done. It is our job as artists to provoke people to think for themselves and leave it to others to preach and educate." Thomas Høegh, Director

"Identity of the Soul immerses the audience in music, imagery and poetry; all designed to assault and seduce them, on a scale that is intensely emotional, sensitive and thought provoking." Qatar Tribune

“The images are dynamic, the transitions elegant and combined with modern technology they drive the poems forward in unexpected and original ways.” Telemarksavisa (Norway)
