Three more poems from Marwan Ali

The following three poems were translated by Raphael Cohen. There was no space for them in Banipal 50 – Prison Writing, so we are pleased to include them here online.

LOOK

I stop

under the tree

under

your balcony.

I give it a good shake

perhaps I’ll enjoy

an old look

of yours.

TRANSLATION

You:

another reason for the Dutch translator’s passion to translate my poems. He got confused like the rest of them and translated the poems back into Arabic.

TRAIN

Whenever the train

goes by your house

it looks back.

That, in spite of the long journey

is the secret of the passengers’ joy.
