Mahmoud Chreih was born in Beirut in 1952 to Palestinian parents from Galilee. He studied literature and philosophy at the American University of Beirut and at the University of Hull, with theses at both universities on Hegel.

He taught European Philosophy at the American University of Beirut and the University of Balamand.

He has written commentaries in Arabic on Kant and Hegel and published books on the life of Tawfiq Sayigh, including Tawfiq Sayigh: A Biography of a Poet (Riad el-Rayyes, London, 1989) and on that of Khalil Hawi.

He translated into Arabic Hisham Sharabi’s Neo-Patriarchy in the Modern Arab World, and edited the English translation of Antoun Saadeh’s The Genesis of Nations.
