was born in Suhag, Egypt, in 1958. He is a Professor of Islamic Philosophy and History of the Sciences, and Director of the Centre for Manuscripts and of the Museum of Manuscripts at the Library of Alexandria. He is a well-known researcher on Arab cultural heritage, publishing fifty-four books, and cataloging eleven Egyptian manuscript libraries. He has also edited many texts of Sufi literature in verse and prose, authored books on literary criticism, and the novels Zill al-Af‘a (The Serpent’s Shadow) and Azazeel (Beelzebub).
