is presently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures at Boston University, USA. He grew up in Iraq and received his BA and MA from Baghdad University in the early 1970s. He was Assistant Professor at Mosul University, 1979-1990. He has a doctorate from Indiana University (1999), teaching there 1991–2000. His research interests include Arabic culture and literature, Irish literature, translation, Jewish-American fiction. Recent publications include translations of two Mahdi Issa al-Saqr stories in the Edebiyat journal of Spring 2002 and co-editing A Century of Irish Drama for Indiana University Press (2000). He is a regular contributor to Banipal.
