was born in Brooklyn, the daughter of Lebanese immigrants. She started writing at the age of eight, and has been a published writer for over 30 years, with seven poetry collections (the latest New York Poems, Syracuse University Press, 2005), one novel, two critical works on Black poets, a creative writing workbook, a musical drama plus innumerable essays.

She has an MA and a PhD, and has received many awards for her work. Her poems have also appeared in anthologies, and in major US literary journals.
