Samira al-Mana (1935–2026)
was born in Basra, Iraq in 1935. She graduated in Arabic Literature from Baghdad University, and in 1965 moved to London, where she has lived since then. She has a diploma in librarianship from Ealing Technical College (1976).
In 1985, she co-founded al-Ightirab al-adabi (Literature in Exile), a literary journal for Iraqi exiles, with her husband and lifelong partner the Iraqi poet Salah Niazi.
She has published four novels, two collections of short stories and a play (English & Arabic). In 2005 her novel The Umbilical Cord was published in English translation.
Samira passed away on 19 June 2026, leaving behind her family Salah Niazi and two daughters.
