was born in 1941 in Ain-Beide, Algeria. He spent his early childhood there before moving to Tunisia. In 1963 he began studying Philosophy at the University of Algiers and completed his studies at the Sorbonne in 1966. He published his first and immediately acclaimed novel La Répudiation in 1969, thus beginning a successful career as novelist and scriptwriter. He now writes in both French and Arabic. He lives between Algiers and Paris.
