Farid Belkahia was born in 1934 in Marrakesh and spent his childhood in nearby Amizmiz at the foot of the Atlas mountains. He travels widely but lives and paints in Marrakech. He is renowned for creating an authentic Moroccan visual language, using materials such as parchment and henna, earth tones instead of primary colours and Berber and Islamic forms instead of European abstraction.
