(1804–1887) was an Ottoman writer, scholar and journalist, and is considered one of the founding fathers of modern Arabic literature and journalism. He studied in Cairo and Cambridge, wrote most of his works in Paris, and later moved to Tunis and Istanbul. His major works were dedicated to the modernisation of the Arabic language and defending its culture.
