Habib Abdulrab Sarori is a Yemeni novelist, writer and professor, born in Aden in 1956. His literary works include a novel, La Reine Étripée (1998), in French and ten novels in Arabic, a collection of short stories and a book of poetry.
An extract from his novel, The Bird of Destruction (2005), appeared in English translation in Banipal 36 – Literature in Yemen Today. His novel Bint Suslov (Suslov's Daughter) was longlisted for the 2015 International Prize for Arabic Fiction and published by Darf Publishers in English translation by Elisabeth Jacquette in 2017. In 2019 he won the Katara award for the Arabic novel for his novel Wahi. He has also published three cultural books in Arabic, as well as numerous literary and cultural articles in papers such as Le Monde and Libération.
After pursuing higher studies in applied mathematics in France, Habib Abdulrab Sarori obtained a master’s degree in Informatics from the University of Paris 6 in 1983, followed by a PhD from the University of Rouen in 1987, and finally in 1992 he was awarded Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR, Accreditation to Direct Research).
Since 1992 he has been a professor in the Mathematical and Software Engineering Department of the National Institute of Applied Sciences of Rouen at the University of Normandy.
He has published numerous scientific papers over the last four decades and is also the author of textbooks in computer science.
In the early months of 2023 (January to March) he was the Banipal Visiting Writer Fellow at St Aidan's College, University of Durham, and was able to start work on a new novel. Towards the end of the Fellowship, he participated in Banipal's Grand Evening of Literature on 9 March at Newcastle's Lit and Phil Library which celebrated 25 years of Banipal translating and publishing contemporary Arab literature.
