Selected Poems

Translated by Issa J Boullata

A STAR

Take your pen tonight and draw your shining star

then go to sleep

The star will grow wings

and will leave the paper blank at dawn

HORSES

Only horses

know the secret of our sorrows

in the splendour of spring

I’LL NOT STRAY

I’ll not lose my way

in this darkness

The light of the glowworm

will guide my steps

MOBY DICK

I can still see the sea

reddened by blood

gushing from Melville’s whales

as they writhe under the stabs

of the sailors’ spears and daggers
